Ever wanted to know how your hard disk is performing? Or just wanted to make sure it’s working at its optimum level. It’s a shame Windows doesn’t comes with any tool to check the health and issues regarding hard disks. However, with HD Tune, you can do a lot more then checking.
HD Tune is an advanced but easy to use hard disk utility. It measures the performance, shows the related info, checks the health status of the hard disk using SMART, scans the surface for errors, and also displays current hard disk temperature.
In order to verify performance of your hard disk, you’ve to run the benchmark and check the results with the database provided on their web site. Here’s how to benchmark your hard disk for its performance.
When you run the benchmark test, a graph is generated with minimum transfer rate, maximum transfer rate, average rate and many more things. For example, in the following figure the graph shows that the hard disk started at its maximum speed, but then slows down towards the end of the test.
However, a few downward spikes in the graph are not a problem. It just means that any other application or Windows was using the hard disk while the test was going on. But the important factor is Burst rate. This value should always be higher than the maximum transfer rate offered by your hard disk.
If the Burst rate is lower than the maximum transfer rate that means that your hard disk is not performing as it should be. If that happens, you should check out this tutorial to solve the issue.
Its a freeware and works from Windows Win2000 and above including Windows Vista.
