The File backup feature and restore feature included in Windows Vista simplifies the task of keeping your critical private data safe from various system issues such as hardware/software failures and crashes, user errors, and several other unavoidable system problems and issues. Depending on the edition of Windows Vista installed on your system, you can backup your private data using the following two techniques:

  • Automatic Backup: This feature in Windows Vista helps you back up only your personal files and other private data. This Automatic Backup feature is included in almost all Windows Vista editions, except the Starter edition and the Home Basic edition.These Windows Vista editions comprise only some basic functions.
  • Complete PC Backup: This feature in Windows Vista helps you back up everything that is on your computer, including your operating system files and other applications installed on it. This feature is available only in the Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions.Complete PC Backup is an image-based backup technique that you can use to recover your entire system in one go.

On Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Business editions,sometimes the following error messages may display when you try to perform a backup operation by the Complete PC Backup method.The error message says that:

Windows could not find backup devices on your computer. The following information might explain why this problem occurred:

Incorrect function. (0x80070001)

This Incorrect function 0×80070001 error is generated when you select the Complete PC Backup option from the Backup and Restore Center in Windows Vista control panel and then you select Create a backup now.

Your backup configuration is not valid. Review your backup settings. (0x81000029).

This error is generated when in the Backup and Restore Center dialog box in Windows Vista, you select Back Up Files and then you choose to save the backup on the hard disk.

The above Windows Vista backup error messages are usually generated if an EISA partition on your hard disk is marked as active.

To resolve these Windows Vista backup errors, perform the following steps:

  • Open Windows Vista Start menu and then in the Start Search box, type in diskmgmt.msc .
  • Next, in the opened Programs list select diskmgmt.msc to display the Disk Management window.
  • In the opened Disk Management window, right-click on the primary disk partition that you want to make active.
  • From the opened right-click context menu, select the option Mark Partition as Active.
  • Close the Disk Management window and then restart your computer by booting up with the Windows Vista DVD.
  • When prompted, specify your preferred language option in the Windows Vista setup and then click the Next button.
  • If the System Recovery Options menu is displayed in the Windows Vista setup, select the option Repair your computer.
  • Next, select the Windows Vista edition you want to repair in the System Recovery Options dialog box, and then click the Next button to continue.
  • After the Windows Vista repair process completes, click the Finish button.
  • Next, restart your Windows Vista computer from the hard disk and remove Windows Vista DVD from your DVD drive.
  • After your computer restarts, log on to it and then try to perform your system backup activity once again
